Magazines I Love!

You all know that I am an avid reader. I love books, have too many books, and am always reading a book (and lately…more than one)! I think that reading is one of the most fun things to do, but I’m also a big fan of glossies. Here are some of my favorite magazines and why you should give them a try too.

I mention Body + Soul Magazine first because I just recently started reading it. A few months ago, my Mom picked one up for me at the grocery store. This magazine is a Martha Stewart production which packs tons of articles on health, wellness, and green living into a portable companion. I was attracted to “50 Tips For Staying Healthy.” Some of the tips I did not know about and was pleasantly surprised to learn that by drinking certain teas, and incorporating different herbs and spices into your diet (licorice, anyone?) that you can improve your overall health. I’m usually not a fan of medication, so I like knowing about foods that can help your body naturally. As I’m also a beauty junkie, Body + Soul also has a beauty section which boasts a bunch of natural and green beauty products. My favorite ideas from them? A gratitude journal. This will be one of my next projects!

For me, I love reading about high fashion that I dream of owning–but knowing where to get similar designs without breaking my college student budget. Glamour Magazine does this! I like knowing how to re-work my closet and my outfits with a few key, classic pieces. I also love the fact that Glamour celebrates women. I’ve been reading this magazine for years and have noticed how diverse they have gotten. I’m not just talking about skin color either. I’m talking about body type, socioeconomic status, and culture. Their worldly articles let me know some of the biggest issues women around the globe face on a daily basis, as well as how I can help. I also love their annual “Man Issue” and their “Women of The Year” issue. I love Glamour because it combines fashion, beauty, news, and health all in one magazine. I also love their sub heading for their health section, “How to Protect the Body That You Love.” Shouldn’t we all give ourselves a bit more love?

One of my best friends, Jess, got me into this magazine and I have been reading it ever since. It makes me sad that Bitch Magazine only comes out quarterly. (I have to wait for more feminist response to pop culture?!?! NOOOO!!!) I wish this magazine came out every month. I re-read so many of my issues and have many of them saved as well. My favorite issue to date is “Consumed” which came out in the Fall of 2009. 2009 was the year I first saw the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest–and the first time I saw a magazine cover said contest in such an amazing way. I also enjoy their book reviews which have added many more books to my “Buy ASAP” list. Did I mention they also rag on the Twilight Saga? The way to my heart is through the dismembering of the Twilight Saga.

Last, but certainly not least: US Weekly. I love US because it’s my weekly source for celebrity gossip. Don’t you want to know 25 random facts about Chef Ramsey? YOU BET YOU DO! I like being able to know that I have media ‘facts’ coming to me every Thursday, and also being able to read them before I go to sleep. Sometimes Dickens (ha!) and Hurston need to be put to the side for my sleepy-time reading. I like US for another reason aside from simple celebrity gossip. I love their buzz-o-meter. This fancy contraption is a short review of places, things, and people that celebs are going nuts for. I also love their fashion police sections. Who knew that people who have so much money could look so silly?

So, if you’re looking for some good reads give these glossies a try, and of course, let me know what magazines you love to read. I always like to have new reading material!

  1. Oh, I am so addicted to reading as well. I can’t go to the grocery store without picking up a magazine or even a paperback. I’ve read a few issues of body + soul, I liked it, but I subscribe to Real Simple and they seem very similar publications.

  2. I’ve never heard of body+soul! I’m gonna look for it next time I’m in B&N! Sounds like it’s a good combination of the many things I’m into :D

    Jenny
  3. I’ve never heard of the first two. I will certainly have to give them a try. I Love Rachel Ray’s magazine, and the Martha Stewart home one that comes out at the holiday’s with all of the recipes and decor and whatnot.

Do you get your subscriptions through one of those discount sites? They are great ways to save money on mags!

  4. I have heard of those magazine but I never really buy them. They are quite expensive in my country :/

    Grysh
  5. I mainly stick with video game and sometimes car magazines. I don’t really like celebrity gossip much.

  6. I never heard Body+Soul before, but after reading this, I am thinking to grab one.

  7. I used to buy 3 or 4 magazines a month when I was in high school. I loved the teen magazines so I could keep up on the celebrity gossip. These days I rarely find time to read magazines. My mom bought me a subscription to Women’s Health magazine which I am still back on the summer issues. I also have a bunch of Chatelane that my boyfriend’s mom gave to me when she was finished with them. I am so behind on reading all my magazines. I would love to get caught up so I can start buying new ones but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

  8. I’ve never heard of Body & Soul or Bitch magazine. They look interesting though. I subscribe to Cosmopolitan, but I’m also considering subscribing to Glamour and Nylon too.

  9. I’ve never heard of either of those magazines. The Bitch magazine looks so interesting though. I haven’t subscribed to a magazine in so long. I used to get Prevention & Self. I’m going to to try and get my hands on Bitch. I’m curious to read a copy or two!

  10. To answer some of the questions you asked on my blog, I do sometimes go to different schools each day to teach. If I’m lucky I will sometimes keep going back to the same school a few times a week or a few weeks at a time. I am qualified to teach from grade primary up to grade 9 but haven’t gone higher than grade 5 at this point. I’m an elementary school teacher so I teach all different subjects that are taught in school like math, english, social studies, etc. As a substitute teacher I’m technically allowed to teach any subjects that they need me for even if I’m not qualified. I have done french (I don’t speak any french lol), resource, and learning center. I was also trained to teach physical education but haven’t actually done that yet.

  11. I actually don’t read any magazines! I’m weird – I know. :P

    Holly
  12. Magazines are quite fun and entertaining to read! I’m pretty curious about that bitch magazine but sadly we don’t have that here! Boo!

    Gel
  13. I love reading magazines too – I’m trying to get back into my good old habit of reading loads hehe. :)
I usually read music magazines like Kerrang, Rocksound and Metal Hammer, but I do occasionally read the odd cosmopolitan. ;) heheh.
If I can find those magazines I’ll probably pick one up. :) x

    Annabelle
  14. I’ll have to check those ones out! I’m currently hooked on fitness magazines (Fitness, Oxygen, Shape, Self). I am hoping the addition actually gets me to go to the gym instead of sitting on my butt in sweats eating ice cream and reading about people who do what I should be doing LOL.

  15. Strangely enough, the only time I read magazines is if I’m bored and I find one of the ones my Mum’s subscribed to laying around — And the only time I buy a magazine myself is if Green Day or Avril Lavigne’s on the cover!

Sounds pretty weird, I know, but for the most part I don’t find magazines to be all that great of an investment, because every time I read one, I already know 90% of the stuff they’re telling me … And the other 10%, I’m like, ‘Pffffft, I could’ve learnt about that on the Internet for free! ><;’

    I dunno. Maybe I’m just too high tech, LOL. xD;

PS: D’you know about the benefits of ginger tea already …? If so, awesome! DRINK ITTT. x3; If not, let me know and I’ll let you know, hehe. ^^

  16. Oooh I love, love, love Body + Soul. One of my roommates is subscribed to it so it’s fun coming home to read a very informative magazine about health and fitness. I also enjoy reading Shape magazine. It’s somewhat similar to Body + Soul but tends to feature celebs.

    Felisa
  17. Body + Soul and bitch magazine both sound super neat! i also really love cosmopolitan and Vegetarian times. Nothing better than a new recipe to try! :)

    Stepherz
  18. I have never heard of Bitch magazine, I will definitely try to subscribe to them!!!

    Lady Impulse
  19. Hahaha I totally get Bitch magazine just for the name! Do you buy them in the bookstore or online? I’ve never seen them in the bookstore, but maybe because I live in Canada? I dunno. But it looks awesome!
